Moving Trucks: Is It Time To Consider Radiator Servicing?

Posted on: 24 February 2017

Your vehicle's engine operates at extremely high temperatures. This is why your radiator system is so important as it functions to ensure that these high temperatures do not adversely affect the performance of your engine. Nevertheless, as with other vehicle components, your radiator can develop wear and tear over time. The severity of the problem is what would determine how extensively the performance of your engine will be compromised. This is why it is essential to know how to spot the signs of radiator trouble and have them attended to as soon as possible. So how do you know if it is time to consider radiator servicing?

Your vehicle is emitting large plumes of white exhaust smoke

One of the symptoms that you should be wary of when it comes to the performance of your vehicle is your exhaust smoke changing colour. If your exhaust smoke turns white, it would imply that your engine's coolant is leaking. This leaked coolant then makes its way into the vehicle's combustion chamber where it ends up being burnt along with your fuel. Any signs of white exhaust smoke should call for immediate auto repairs as it could lead to the overheating of your vehicle.

Your vehicle has started overheating on a regular basis

If you find that your vehicle is overheating more often than usual, chances are there is an underlying issue with your radiator. As your engine is exposed to high temperatures on a constant basis without any cooling, white steam will begin to emanate from under your vehicle's bonnet. This white steam would indicate that the coolant is being boiled away rather than it actually cooling your engine. Some motorists make the mistake of simply pulling over, pouring some water into the engine, giving a few minutes to cool then heading back on the road. This is not a permanent solution and you will find the frequency of your engine overheating will steadily increase. It is best to have the truck serviced to ensure that the cause of the problem is remedied.

Your radiator has started corroding

A telltale sign of corrosion on your radiator is it becoming discoloured. This will happen when there is an undetected leak that is allowing fluid to make its way to the surface of the engine. As the fluid is burned off, it will manifest as discolouration, which eventually leads to rusting. It would be essential to have this looked at so that the leak can be identified and fixed.
